Air India Completes First Phase of Legacy A320neo Fleet Retrofit Programme
Air India has completed the retrofit of its 27 legacy A320neo aircraft with modern three-class cabins and new livery, forming part of a $400 million fleet modernization initiative. Combined with 14 new A320neos and ex-Vistara aircraft, the airline now operates 104 updated A320 Family planes, serving 3,024 weekly flights on key domestic and short-haul international routes.
Air India announced the successful completion of the retrofit programme for its legacy Airbus A320neo fleet, with the last of 27 aircraft returning to service featuring new cabin interiors and the airline’s updated livery. This retrofit, initiated in September 2024, was completed within one year as part of a broader $400 million initiative to modernize the airline's entire legacy fleet. Each retrofitted A320neo has a three-class configuration and includes USB-A and USB-C ports for device charging and access to Air India’s 'Vista Stream' in-flight entertainment service, which offers nearly 900 hours of global content. Along with 14 newly delivered A320neos and aircraft absorbed from Vistara, Air India now operates 104 A320 Family aircraft with new or upgraded cabins, supporting 3,024 weekly flights across 82 domestic and short-haul international routes. These routes cover major Indian city pairs like Delhi-Mumbai and Mumbai-Bengaluru, as well as short-haul international destinations including Bangkok, Singapore, and Riyadh. The retrofit programme is part of a comprehensive modernization effort, which will continue with upcoming cabin upgrades on 13 legacy A321 aircraft starting in 2026 and widebody Boeing 787-8 and 777-300ER aircraft retrofits scheduled through 2028.
