Air India completes first phase of legacy retrofit on A320neo fleet
Air India has completed a $400 million retrofit program modernizing 27 legacy A320neo aircraft with new cabin interiors and livery. Combined with 14 new A320neos and Vistara's integrated fleet, 104 A320 Family aircraft now feature upgraded cabins. Operating 3,024 weekly flights on 82 routes, the airline plans to retrofit A321 and widebody Boeing aircraft through 2028.
Air India announced the successful completion of the retrofit program for its entire legacy A320neo fleet, consisting of 27 aircraft, finished within one year since September 2024. These aircraft received new cabin interiors in a three-class configuration with USB-A and USB-C ports and enhanced inflight entertainment via Air India's Vista Stream service. This retrofit is part of a broader $400 million initiative to modernize Air India's legacy fleet, resulting in 104 A320 Family aircraft operating with new or upgraded interiors, including 14 newly delivered A320neos and those from the Vistara merger. The airline operates 3,024 weekly flights across 82 domestic and short-haul international routes such as Delhi-Mumbai, Bangkok, and Singapore, offering a consistent world-class inflight experience. Air India plans to retrofit 13 legacy A321 aircraft starting in 2026 and has started a widebody retrofit program for 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft, expected to complete by mid-2027, introducing a three-class cabin. Additionally, 13 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft will undergo retrofit starting early 2027, with completion extended to October 2028 due to supply chain delays. This phased modernization advances Air India’s goal of elevating passenger experience and establishing a globally competitive cabin product.
