Assam Petrochemicals Limited (APL) and Deendayal Port Authority have formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a cutting-edge e-methanol production plant at Kandla Port in Gujarat. This significant agreement, witnessed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, marks a pivotal moment for Assam's industrial landscape, extending its developmental footprint beyond state borders. CM Sarma underscored the project's direct contribution to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's national net-zero carbon emission goals, identifying e-methanol as a crucial green fuel for decarbonizing the shipping sector. The Chief Minister highlighted APL's five-decade legacy as India's first methanol producer using natural gas, now transitioning towards carbon-neutral bio-ethanol. He emphasized Assam's commitment to green industrialization, ensuring development respects the state's rich biodiversity, citing projects like ethanol production from bamboo at Numaligarh Refinery. This initiative positions Assam not as a peripheral economy but as a capable partner in India's growth, serving as the 'economic gateway' for the Northeast. The project is designed to create a robust industrial bridge between eastern India and the western coast, leveraging waterways like the Brahmaputra River connected to Kandla Port via the Bay of Bengal. This strategic connectivity aims to drastically reduce logistics costs, making Assam-made products globally competitive and significantly boosting the state's economy and national maritime trade. Furthermore, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of skilling Assam's youth in advanced technologies, ensuring local employment and expertise in modern industries like e-methanol and semiconductors. This endeavor, supported by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, exemplifies the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' vision, showcasing Assam’s public sector's capacity for national-level competition and promoting advanced green technologies to combat climate change.
