CIET 2025 Highlights Blue Ammonia and Gas Chemistry for Turkmenistan's Chemical Industry Growth
At the CIET-2025 conference in Awaza, Turkmenistan outlined new directions for its chemical industry focusing on deep natural gas processing, particularly blue ammonia production with near-complete CO2 capture. The country aims to diversify its economy by transitioning from raw material exports to producing chemical products including fertilizers and hydromineral resources development, inviting international partners to participate.
During the 2025 International Conference on the Development of Construction, Industrial, Chemical and Energy Sectors of Turkmenistan (CIET-2025), Acting Chairman Tanryguly Ataev of the State Concern “Turkmenkhimiya” presented key strategies for transforming Turkmenistan’s chemical industry. Turkmenistan, endowed with vast natural gas reserves, is pursuing deep processing of natural gas into syngas and related chemical products, aiming to move beyond raw material exports. A flagship initiative is the production of blue ammonia at a new urea complex in Balkan province, utilizing technology that substantially reduces CO2 emissions through near-complete carbon capture. The conference also presented plans to expand production capacities for nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers, iodine-bromine products, caustic soda, chlorine, and the sustainable exploitation of hydromineral resources in Garabogaz Bay. These developments reflect Turkmenistan’s comprehensive chemical industry development program, with invitations extended to international investors and partners to engage in upcoming projects, signaling a strategic push towards economic diversification and environmentally conscious industrial growth.
