During his official visit to India, Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos delivered the 55th Sapru House Lecture, where he emphatically stated that India is a 'global powerhouse' and 'mega-trend,' recognizing its growing role as a leading voice in an increasingly multipolar world. Kombos highlighted the shared democratic values and colonial histories of both nations, stressing that Cyprus sees India not just as an old friend but as a crucial partner for future cooperation. He strongly endorsed the conclusion of a long-negotiated Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the European Union and India, arguing it would unlock significant economic opportunities for both regions. Kombos also pointed to the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) as a visionary initiative that could transform global trade routes, with Cyprus positioned to play a key role due to its Mediterranean geography. The minister addressed the complex global landscape, citing the rise of populism, ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, threats in the Red Sea, and challenges in Africa as contributors to global uncertainty. He referenced Cyprus’s own geopolitical struggles, particularly the tensions with Turkey, and noted the discrepancy between international law and the pragmatism of diplomacy. India reaffirmed its support for Cyprus’s sovereignty and a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation in line with UN resolutions. Kombos concluded by emphasizing that current trade antagonisms and tariffs are realities, but they also drive the formation of new alliances and trade routes, underscoring the importance of ambition, vision, and strategic action for both India and Cyprus.
