Dangote Refinery Expands into High-Value Petrochemicals with Honeywell Partnership
Dangote Petroleum Refinery is expanding into high-value petrochemicals through a new partnership with Honeywell. This collaboration enables large-scale production of propylene and linear alkylbenzene (LAB), key ingredients for plastics and detergents. The strategic move aims to reduce Nigeria's reliance on imports, strengthen its industrial base, and position Dangote as a global supplier. The refinery will produce an additional 750,000 metric tonnes of propylene and 400,000 metric tonnes of LAB annually, marking a significant shift towards higher-margin chemical manufacturing.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE is strategically expanding its operations into high-value petrochemicals, facilitated by a new agreement with American firm Honeywell. This collaboration marks a significant shift for the refinery, moving beyond primary fuels production to focus on higher-margin chemical manufacturing. Under the partnership, Dangote will deploy Honeywell UOP’s advanced process technologies, including Oleflex™ technology, and catalysts to significantly boost production. The refinery is set to produce an additional 750,000 metric tonnes of propylene annually, a critical input for packaging materials and consumer goods. Furthermore, it will integrate technologies to produce 400,000 metric tonnes per year of linear alkylbenzene (LAB), a key ingredient for detergents and cleaning agents. This expansion aims to reduce Nigeria's dependence on imported industrial chemicals, strengthen the nation's industrial base, and position the Dangote Group as a competitive global supplier. Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, emphasized that this partnership reinforces the company’s ambition for supply chain independence and economic growth. Honeywell UOP President Rajesh Gattupalli highlighted how these advanced technologies would maximize throughput and help meet global demand. The collaboration also supports Dangote's plan to expand refining capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028. Additionally, in separate news, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc announced plans to raise up to N500 billion through a Rights Issue to strengthen its financial base and support long-term growth, aligning with Nigeria's sugar self-sufficiency drive.
