Delhi Airport Sees 34% Surge in East-West Transit Passengers
Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport handled over 670,000 East-West-East transit passengers from September 2024 to August 2025, a 34% year-on-year increase. Air India and IndiGo together account for over 90% of this traffic. The airport is expanding connectivity to Thailand, Southeast Asia, the UK, and Japan, and will resume flights to China.
Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, operated by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), recorded a 34% year-on-year surge in East-West-East transit passengers, handling over 670,000 such travellers between September 2024 and August 2025. East-to-West traffic rose 34%, while West-to-East increased by 35%. Air India contributed 67% of this transit traffic, with IndiGo accounting for 25%, together handling over 90% of total passenger traffic. The airport is strengthening its position as India's leading gateway to Thailand, operating 120 weekly flights to four destinations. New routes to Krabi and expanded frequencies to Southeast Asia are enhancing leisure connectivity. IndiGo will launch daily flights to Guangzhou, marking the first scheduled passenger service between India and China post-COVID. Delhi also leads in connectivity to the UK and Japan, with new services and expanded frequencies planned. Japan Airlines will launch a daily Delhi-Tokyo Narita service from January 2026. The airport remains the only Indian airport directly linked to three major UK cities and will host four daily flights to Tokyo, further solidifying its role as a global transit hub.
