Delhi Airport to increase passenger capacity to 12.5 crore by 2030
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) plans to raise Indira Gandhi International Airport’s annual passenger capacity by about 20%, from 10.5 crore to 12.5 crore by 2029-30. This expansion will come primarily from constructing Pier E at Terminal 3, easing congestion at Terminal 1, and adding more aircraft parking stands without immediately replacing Terminal 2.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), led by CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, is set to boost Indira Gandhi International Airport’s passenger capacity by approximately 20% by the financial year 2029-30, increasing it from 10.5 crore to 12.5 crore passengers annually. The expansion plan focuses on completing Pier E at Terminal 3 within two to three years, which will help relieve pressure on Terminal 1. One domestic pier at Terminal 3 will also be converted for international use this winter. While Terminal 2 was recently refurbished and has reopened, its replacement with a larger terminal is deferred until passenger traffic reaches certain thresholds, likely aligned with the new capacity milestones. The airport currently handles just under 8 crore passengers and is projected to reach 80% capacity of the future 12.5 crore figure by around 2029-30, which typically triggers new development phases. The expansion will also include the addition of more aircraft parking stands. The airport’s phased growth aims to accommodate increasing passenger volumes while monitoring traffic impact from the upcoming Noida International Airport nearby. This strategic approach ensures Delhi Airport remains a major aviation hub while enhancing passenger experience and operational efficiency.
