Delhi Bans Entry of BS4 Commercial Vehicles from November 1 to Combat Air Pollution

Starting November 1, 2025, Delhi has banned the entry of all BS4 commercial vehicles to reduce worsening air pollution. Only BS6-compliant commercial vehicles are permitted, with enforcement at city borders by Delhi and neighboring state authorities. The ban targets diesel trucks and goods carriers operating on older emission standards, with fines up to ₹20,000 for violations.

To address the critical rise in air pollution, the Delhi government implemented a ban effective November 1, 2025, prohibiting entry of all commercial vehicles powered by BS4 engines or older emission standards into the national capital. This measure, mandated by the Commission for Air Quality Management, restricts all non-BS6 commercial vehicles, including light, medium, and heavy goods vehicles, aiming to improve Delhi's hazardous air quality, especially during the winter months when pollution peaks. Strict checks have been established at Delhi's borders with support from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan authorities to enforce the ban. Vehicles violating the rule face denial of entry and fines up to ₹20,000. Despite the official mandate, on-ground enforcement shows variability; while some border points have active inspections and vehicle turnbacks, others have seen lax checks. Experts believe this policy will push transport operators to upgrade fleets to cleaner BS6 engines, significantly contributing to pollution reduction if rigorously implemented. This ban is part of the broader Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to control Delhi-NCR's air quality crisis and aligns with national efforts to phase out highly polluting vehicles.
