Delhi to Attempt Cloud Seeding Amid Favourable Weather
Delhi is expected to attempt cloud seeding on Tuesday if conditions are favourable, as the city struggles with severe air pollution. The effort aims to induce artificial rain. Earlier trials were conducted with the help of IIT Kanpur to assess readiness and capabilities.
The Delhi government plans to attempt cloud seeding on Tuesday if weather conditions are favourable. The decision comes as the city faces severe air pollution, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the 'very poor' category. Earlier this month, a trial run was conducted over Burari with assistance from IIT Kanpur. The process involves dispersing silver iodide into clouds to induce rain, which can help reduce pollution. However, the success of cloud seeding heavily depends on moisture levels in the air, typically requiring at least 50%. India Meteorological Department forecasts suggest cloud cover and potential light rain, creating a window for the operation. The air quality has been worsening since Diwali, partly due to farm fires in neighbouring states, which are expected to increase in the coming days.
