Delhi's First Artificial Rain Expected Soon After Cloud Seeding Trial
Delhi conducted its first cloud seeding trial on October 28, 2025, with artificial rain expected within 15 minutes to 4 hours, depending on weather conditions. The trial is part of efforts to combat the city's severe pollution. The initiative is based on a collaboration with IIT Kanpur and has received extensive government clearances.
On October 28, 2025, Delhi carried out its first cloud seeding trial as part of a coordinated effort to induce artificial rain and alleviate severe pollution in the city. The aircraft involved took off from Kanpur once visibility improved, completing the seeding operation over Delhi. According to local authorities, rain can be expected anytime within 15 minutes to 4 hours after the seeding, depending on moisture levels and weather conditions. This trial follows an MoU signed by the Delhi government with IIT Kanpur to conduct five cloud seeding trials between October and November, with required permissions secured from central and state departments, including defense, environment, and civil aviation authorities. The initiative aims to reduce air pollution, which remains in the severe category throughout Delhi. The total project cost approved by the Delhi Cabinet is Rs 3.21 crore, with ongoing monitoring of results following the first trial. This marks Delhi's first-ever attempt at artificial rain through cloud seeding, which has been delayed several times due to unfavorable weather earlier in the year.
