Delhi government plans to extend the Munak Canal elevated road with a new 4km tunnel from Inderlok to Kashmere Gate, aiming to create a seamless, signal-free corridor that will reduce travel time by up to 40%. The project aims to ease congestion at key bottlenecks and improve connectivity with ISBT, Outer Ring Road, and Wazirabad corridor, providing relief for commuters from north Delhi and Haryana.

The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) is preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for extending the Munak Canal elevated road with a 4-kilometer tunnel between Inderlok and Kashmere Gate ISBT. The project is designed to create a continuous, signal-free corridor connecting the Delhi-Haryana border to central Delhi, significantly cutting travel time by 40%. This extension will help alleviate traffic congestion at major bottlenecks including Mukarba Chowk, Azadpur, and Roshanara Road. The corridor will enhance connectivity by linking directly with ISBT, Outer Ring Road, and Wazirabad corridor, improving commute for vehicles coming from Sonipat, Rohtak, and Urban Extension Road. In September, Delhi assumed maintenance responsibility for a 20km stretch of the canal from Bawana to Inderlok to better manage this vital infrastructure. PWD Minister Parvesh Verma emphasized the importance of futuristic, innovative infrastructure solutions for sustainable urban mobility. A feasibility study and site inspections have begun, with planners analyzing structural, lane, and intersection designs and developing three conceptual plans. The project forms part of a broader strategy to address traffic congestion and urban mobility challenges in north and northwest Delhi and for travelers from Haryana.
