India and Sri Lanka have discussed launching a new ferry service between Rameswaram and Talaimannar. This aims to enhance maritime connectivity and deepen regional cooperation, building on the existing route between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai.

India's Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, met with Sri Lanka's Ports and Civil Aviation Minister, Anura Karunathilake, during India Maritime Week 2025. They discussed expanding maritime connectivity by launching a ferry service between Rameswaram and Talaimannar. This move follows the resumption of a ferry service between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai in October 2023. The new route is expected to boost regional cooperation and people-to-people connections. It aligns with India's efforts to strengthen its maritime sector and enhance trade relationships with neighboring countries.
