India Poised to Become Global Green Hydrogen Hub
India has the resources, policy, and demand to emerge as a world leader in green hydrogen production. With unmatched renewable energy rates, strong government support, a robust industrial base, and significant domestic and export opportunities, India is well-positioned to drive the global clean energy transition.
Green hydrogen is increasingly recognized as a vital fuel for reducing emissions in sectors like steel, fertilizers, shipping, aviation, and road transport. According to Amitabh Kant, India possesses five key strengths that position it as a global leader in green hydrogen: globally competitive round-the-clock renewable energy rates, consistent and ambitious government policy, a strong industrial ecosystem, substantial domestic demand, and vast export potential. The National Green Hydrogen Mission provides clear targets and regulatory confidence, while India’s engineering capabilities and infrastructure support rapid scaling. Domestic demand from industries such as fertilizers, refining, steel, and chemicals will drive uptake, while export markets in Europe and Japan seek clean hydrogen imports. Recent achievements include SECI awarding contracts for 450,000 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen and a record-low price of Rs 55.75 per kg for green ammonia. Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum have also launched landmark projects. Challenges like high capital costs, certification disputes, skill shortages, and tender delays can be addressed through concessional finance, international standards, skilling missions, and improved bid design. By producing the cheapest green hydrogen, creating value-added products, and becoming a trusted global supplier, India can achieve leadership in the clean economy.
