The Indian women’s cricket team, led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, received a rousing welcome upon arrival at the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi on Tuesday evening, following their historic ICC Women’s World Cup victory in Navi Mumbai. The team’s arrival was marked by traditional drum performances (dhol), celebratory dances, and a festive atmosphere as fans and hotel staff greeted the players with vermilion tilaks and national songs. The BCCI has announced a cash reward of INR 51 crore for the team, distributed among players, support staff, and the national selection committee. Despite the grand celebrations, there are no plans for an official victory parade, according to BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia. The team secured the World Cup by defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a rain-delayed final, with notable performances from Shafali Verma (87 runs) and Deepti Sharma (58 runs and a five-wicket haul). The players will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday for a formal felicitation, mirroring the honor given to the men’s team after their recent T20 World Cup win. After the meeting, the team members are expected to return to their respective homes. This victory marks a watershed moment for Indian women’s cricket, ending a long wait for a senior ICC trophy and sparking nationwide celebrations.
