India's copper demand increased by 9.3% to 1,878 kilotonnes in FY25, primarily driven by growth in building construction and infrastructure. The clean energy transition, renewable energy projects, and consumer durables also contributed significantly. Policies promoting renewables and industrial development are key factors, alongside increased use of recycled copper to meet rising demand and support sustainability.

According to the International Copper Association India (ICA India), India’s copper demand surged by 9.3% year-on-year to reach 1,878 kilotonnes in fiscal year 2024-25. This marked increase is largely attributed to robust growth in large-scale building construction and infrastructure projects, which recorded 11% and 17% annual growth respectively. The clean energy transition plays a critical role, with renewable energy capacity additions and electric vehicle (EV) adoption—especially two- and three-wheelers—driving up demand. Consumer durables also saw a sharp 19% rise in copper consumption, fueled by record sales of appliances like air conditioners and fans. The industrial motors segment expanded by 12%, supporting energy efficiency goals. The report highlights that government policies favoring renewable energy, sustainable mobility, and infrastructure development are fundamental drivers of this copper demand surge. Additionally, India is increasing recycling of copper to sustain supply resilience in the long term. This growth aligns with India’s broader economic and industrial momentum and underscores copper’s vital role in the nation’s green transition and infrastructure expansion ambitions. Furthermore, projections indicate that copper demand will continue growing significantly toward 2030, with strategies needed to bridge supply gaps through enhanced domestic production, technological improvements, and international cooperation.
