Ineos Acetyls and Sandpiper Chemicals announced a strategic $1.7 billion collaboration to build a low-carbon methanol production facility in Texas City, Texas. Ineos will become a shareholder and anchor customer, consuming up to 300,000 tons annually. The plant, utilizing natural gas with 97% carbon capture, aims to produce 1.1 million metric tons per annum by 2030. This project leverages existing infrastructure, targets reduced carbon intensity, and will create significant jobs, addressing the growing demand for sustainable fuels and chemical feedstocks.

Ineos Acetyls and Sandpiper Chemicals have announced a significant $1.7 billion strategic collaboration to develop a low-carbon methanol production facility in Texas City, Texas. Ineos Acetyls will play a dual role as both a shareholder in the project and a crucial anchor customer, planning to consume up to 300,000 tons of the produced methanol annually for its Acetic Acid operations. The facility, slated for Ineos’ existing Texas City site, will capitalize on the region's robust petrochemical infrastructure, deep-water port access, and skilled labor. It is engineered to produce approximately 1.1 million metric tons per annum (MTPA) of low-carbon methanol. This will be achieved by utilizing natural gas in conjunction with advanced carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, which targets an impressive 97% capture rate of process CO₂ emissions, ensuring a carbon intensity significantly below conventional methanol production benchmarks. The project's timeline anticipates the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) phase commencing in Q2 2026, with a Final Investment Decision (FID) targeted for 2027, and commercial production expected to begin by 2030. Both companies underscore the strategic importance of this venture, citing low-carbon methanol's growing recognition as a critical fuel for maritime decarbonization and a vital feedstock for the chemical and energy sectors. The collaboration is poised to create approximately 1,500 construction jobs and 25 permanent operational positions, reinforcing the economic and environmental commitments of both Ineos and Sandpiper Chemicals in the transition towards cleaner energy solutions.
