J&K to Promote Organic and Chemical-Free Farming on 7,500 Hectares
Jammu and Kashmir plans to promote natural, chemical-free farming on 7,500 hectares under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) to protect soil health and biodiversity. The initiative includes rejuvenating 20,000 hectares of orchards and implementing the National Mission on Natural Farming, supporting farmers in transitioning to sustainable practices with technical and financial aid.
Jammu and Kashmir's Agriculture Minister, Javid Ahmed Dar, announced the identification of 7,500 hectares of land across the Union Territory for natural, chemical-free farming to address health and environmental risks caused by pesticide and fertilizer use. Under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP), launched in 2020, integrated organic and natural fruit cultivation will be expanded, alongside rejuvenation of 20,000 hectares of orchards using eco-friendly methods aimed at enhancing biodiversity and food safety. The government also supports the National Mission on Natural Farming, facilitating a shift from chemical-intensive farming to sustainable, climate-resilient agriculture through scientific approaches and providing farmers with technical and financial assistance. These efforts emphasize soil health preservation, biodiversity protection, and public well-being. Additionally, the government is strengthening food safety regulations and raising awareness to combat food adulteration and unsafe food practices. Minister Dar highlighted the critical role of scientists in guiding ethical, science-based policymaking for agriculture and public health protection. These initiatives reflect J&Kâs commitment to sustainable agriculture and safer food production for its people.
