The Kremlin stated India would continue buying Russian oil if it's economically beneficial, according to spokesman Dmitry Peskov, following President Putin's visit to New Delhi. This comes amid US tariffs on Indian imports related to Russian oil purchases, measures India calls 'unjustified.' Peskov also discussed Russia-US relations, expressing hope for improved ties if 'irritants' are eliminated, and noting positive nuances in the new US national security strategy regarding dialogue and constructive relationships, particularly concerning the Ukraine conflict.

The Kremlin, through spokesman Dmitry Peskov, confirmed on Monday that India is expected to maintain its acquisition of Russian oil, provided it remains economically advantageous for the sovereign nation. This assertion follows Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent state visit to New Delhi, where he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reiterated Moscow's commitment to ensuring 'uninterrupted fuel supplies' to India. Peskov's remarks were made in response to inquiries about India's energy purchasing decisions amid Washington's imposition of a 50% tariff on certain Indian imports, partly a consequence of its ongoing purchase of Russian oil during the Ukraine conflict. India has labeled these US measures, effective since August, as 'unjustified and unreasonable,' pointing out that the United States itself continues to import various commodities, including uranium, palladium, fertilizers, and chemicals, from Russia.Beyond energy trade, the Kremlin spokesman also addressed Russia-US relations, indicating Moscow's belief in the potential for restoring bilateral ties, contingent on the removal of current 'irritants.' Peskov acknowledged the nuances within the new US administration's national security strategy document, particularly its emphasis on dialogue and fostering constructive relationships, though he expressed concerns about potential alterations under future administrations. He had previously stated that the document largely aligns with Russia's perspective, offering a 'modest guarantee' for continued collaborative efforts with the US towards a resolution in Ukraine. The US strategy document, released by President Donald Trump's administration, identifies negotiating an 'expeditious' end to the Russia-Ukraine war as a 'core interest,' aiming to stabilize European economies, prevent escalation, restore strategic stability with Russia, and facilitate Ukraine's post-hostilities reconstruction.
