At the India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented India as a beacon of stability and reliability in a turbulent global landscape. Drawing maritime leaders, CEOs, policymakers, and innovators from over 85 countries, Modi framed India as a 'steady lighthouse'—an anchor for global commerce and investment during times of geopolitical tension, trade disruptions, and shifting supply chains. He noted that India’s maritime sector has undergone significant transformation over the past decade, including the replacement of colonial-era shipping laws with modern, digitally integrated regulations fit for the 21st century. Major Indian ports have not only doubled their capacity but have also greatly reduced turnaround times, now ranking among the most efficient worldwide, sometimes surpassing developed economies. Modi also announced major investments, including Rs 70,000 crore to boost domestic shipbuilding and construct greenfield and brownfield shipyards. He outlined a vision for inclusive maritime development, stressing the importance of empowering island and less-developed nations with technology, training, and infrastructure. By granting large ships the status of infrastructure assets and operationalizing India’s first deepwater international transshipment hub, the country is rapidly advancing toward becoming a global maritime powerhouse. Modi invited global investment, emphasizing that this is an opportune time for expansion in India’s shipping sector and that the nation is committed to peace, prosperity, and sustainability.
