P2 Science and Algenesis Partner on Algae-Derived Bio-Based Polyurethanes
P2 Science and Algenesis have formed a strategic partnership to develop and commercialize 100% bio-based, biodegradable polyurethanes using algae-derived chemicals. The collaboration leverages P2's PIOz™ process and Algenesis' Bio-Iso™ platform to create sustainable materials for footwear, apparel, coatings, adhesives, and consumer products, aiming to eliminate petroleum-based carbon and microplastics.
P2 Science, a leader in green chemistry and sustainable materials, has partnered with Algenesis Corporation, a pioneer in bio-based and biodegradable polyurethanes, to create and commercialize raw materials for 100% bio-based polyurethane production. The partnership utilizes P2 Science's proprietary PIOz™ process, which converts oils from algae into advanced chemical intermediates, and Algenesis' recently commissioned Bio-Iso™ pilot plant and bio-based polyurethane platforms. Together, they are scaling a new chemical and polymer supply chain to produce high-performance, biodegradable polyurethanes without petrochemicals or toxic phosgene. P2 Science is synthesizing algae-based azelaic acid at its Naugatuck, Connecticut facility to supply Algenesis with a key chemical for polymer and isocyanate production. The collaboration aims to eliminate petroleum-based carbon from everyday materials and support the global transition away from microplastics. Both companies are committed to scaling production and making these sustainable solutions broadly available for applications in footwear, apparel, coatings, adhesives, and consumer products. The partnership also complements ongoing commercialization efforts with leading consumer brands across multiple product categories, supporting a cleaner, healthier planet.
