Prabowo inaugurates Southeast Asia's largest petrochemical plant in Cilegon
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto officially opened Southeast Asia's largest petrochemical plant operated by Lotte Chemical Indonesia in Cilegon, Banten. The $4 billion facility covers 107.8 hectares and produces ethylene, propylene, polypropylene, and other chemicals. The plant marks a milestone in Indonesia's industrial development and foreign investment promotion.
On November 6, 2025, President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated the largest petrochemical factory in Southeast Asia, located in Cilegon, Banten province, and operated by South Korean company Lotte Chemical Indonesia (LCI). This modern facility, built at a cost of approximately $4 billion (about Rp60 trillion), spans over 107.8 hectares and is projected to produce significant volumes of petrochemical products, including 1,000 kilotons of ethylene, 520 kilotons of propylene, 350 kilotons of polypropylene, 140 kilotons of butadiene, and 400 kilotons each of benzene, toluene, and xylene annually. The plant is expected to employ tens of thousands of workers and contribute to Indonesia's import substitution program by covering 70% of local demand and exporting 30% of its output. Prabowo acknowledged the foundational role of former President Joko Widodo in initiating the project, which began in 2020 and was planned for completion in 2025. The inauguration ceremony included the presence of key government ministers and officials from the investment and energy sectors. This project represents Indonesia's commitment to attracting foreign investment and advancing its petrochemical industry, making a significant addition to Southeast Asia's industrial landscape.
