PWD to Redevelop 55-km Mahatma Gandhi Ring Road Corridor in Delhi to Ease Traffic
Delhi's Public Works Department (PWD) has commissioned AECOM India Pvt. Ltd. to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for redeveloping the 55-km Mahatma Gandhi Ring Road corridor. The project, divided into six phases, aims to decongest this key arterial road by constructing elevated corridors, improving traffic flow, safety, and integrating public transport connections.
The Delhi government’s Public Works Department (PWD) is initiating a major redevelopment of the 55-km Mahatma Gandhi Road Corridor, also known as Ring Road, to tackle severe traffic congestion and modernize the city's critical transport artery. AECOM India Pvt. Ltd. has been appointed to undertake detailed studies including traffic and mobility analyses, environmental and social impact assessments, and geotechnical investigations, while preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR). The redevelopment plan divides the corridor into six phases covering key stretches from Azadpur Flyover to Hanuman Temple, Majnu Ka Tilla, DND Flyover, Moti Bagh Metro station, Rajouri Garden, and Pitampura. The project emphasizes elevated, signal-free corridors to enhance speed, safety, and connectivity, with designs incorporating pedestrian and cycle tracks, green construction materials, better lighting, and signage. Integration with metro and public transport aims to improve last-mile connectivity. The consultancy will complete the DPR in 24 weeks, following a phased timeline from preliminary surveys to final engineering and financial frameworks. PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh underlined the corridor’s importance to Delhi’s mobility backbone and highlighted the focus on data-driven, environmentally conscious planning. The initiative represents a comprehensive effort to decongest vital junctions, promote sustainable urban transport, and significantly reduce traffic bottlenecks on one of the city’s busiest routes.
