The Delhi government's Public Works Department (PWD) is revamping 41 major roundabouts across the city into themed spaces representing India's states, Union territories, and Armed Forces. The project, incorporating murals, sculptures, lighting, and landscaping, aims to celebrate India's unity in diversity. Completion is targeted for January 2026 to coincide with Republic Day and peak tourist season.
The Delhi government’s Public Works Department (PWD) has launched a project to transform 41 major roundabouts throughout Delhi into cultural and thematic displays representing the diverse states, Union territories, and the Armed Forces of India. This initiative, scheduled for completion by January 2026, will blend traditional motifs with modern design elements such as sculptural installations, murals, advanced lighting, and artistic landscaping. The roundabouts will feature iconic landmarks and heritage symbols like Rajasthan’s forts, Odisha’s Konark Sun Temple, Ayodhya’s Ram Temple, Kerala’s backwaters, Sikkim’s monasteries, Gujarat’s Statue of Unity, and the bamboo craftsmanship of the Northeast. Select roundabouts will also honor the Army, Navy, and Air Force, highlighting their values of bravery and sacrifice. PWD Minister Parvesh Verma emphasized that the project aims to ensure Delhi is not only the political but also the cultural capital of India, reflecting the nation’s “unity in diversity” in every urban corner. The initiative seeks to enrich Delhi’s landscape by making daily travel a celebration of Indian heritage and unity, timed to enhance the city’s visual identity ahead of Republic Day and the high tourist season. The PWD manages about 1,400 kilometers of arterial roads and roundabouts across Delhi, excluding the New Delhi Municipal Council area, which is also part of this beautification effort.
