Röhm implements new PMMA chemical recycling process
Röhm GmbH has implemented an innovative chemical recycling process for PMMA at its Worms site, converting polymethyl methacrylate waste back into high-quality methyl methacrylate (MMA) with over 90% yield. This technology, integrated into existing production, establishes a closed and scalable material cycle, with recycled MMA used in sustainable proTerra products from 2027. Part of the European Recycling Alliance for PMMA, Röhm's investment, supported by German federal funding, underscores its commitment to circular economy principles and reducing reliance on fossil raw materials.
Röhm GmbH has launched an innovative, in-house developed chemical recycling process for polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) at an industrial scale at its Worms site in Germany. This pioneering technology processes and upgrades chemically recycled methyl methacrylate (MMA), depolymerizing PMMA waste back into high-quality MMA with over 90% yield. PMMA, a versatile plastic found in vehicle taillights and medical devices, is ideal for such efficient recycling due to its chemical structure. The new technology integrates seamlessly into Röhm's existing MMA production, establishing a closed and scalable material cycle. From summer 2027, the recycled MMA will be used for manufacturing sustainable proTerra products. This industrial-scale implementation contributes significantly to the European Recycling Alliance for PMMA, co-founded by Röhm in late 2024, which aims to boost end-of-life PMMA recycling across Europe and create a fully closed material loop. Alliance partners, including Pekutherm for waste collection and MyRemono for processing into technical rMMA, contribute to the ecosystem before Röhm upgrades it to virgin-quality MMA. Lukas Dössel, Director Circular Economy at Röhm, highlights that rMMA creates a real cycle in the PMMA value chain, supporting customers in meeting future legal requirements and fostering sustainable material flows, reducing fossil raw material dependence. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy funds Röhm’s investment, promoting energy saving, resource conservation, and emission reduction in German industries. Dössel underscores Röhm's commitment to mindful and circular plastics use, actively driving change.
