Sarawak Ready for Petrochemical Sector, Says Premier

Sarawak Premier Abang Johari announced that the state has produced 700,000 metric tonnes of methanol by August 2025, marking its readiness for the petrochemical sector. He highlighted ongoing green methanol and green ammonia production, positioning Sarawak on par with developed nations. The state is focusing on renewable energy, gas and petrochemicals, CCUS, and semiconductors to achieve developed status by 2035.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari declared that Sarawak is now ready to embrace the petrochemical sector, citing the production of 700,000 metric tonnes of methanol from January to August 2025 as a key achievement. Speaking at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak's 29th Convocation Ceremony, he emphasized the state's progress in establishing its own methanol plant and advancing into green methanol and green ammonia production. Abang Johari stated that Sarawak is now on par with developed nations in these industries. He outlined four key economic frontiers—renewable energy, gas and petrochemicals, carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS), and semiconductors and technology—as part of Sarawak's strategy to achieve developed status by 2035. The Premier stressed the importance of human capital in transforming the state's economic landscape, urging Unimas graduates to play a pivotal role. The convocation ceremony saw 575 graduates from the Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts and the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology receiving their degrees, with a total of 4,100 graduates set to be conferred across various levels.
