SDHI Secures First Chemical Tanker Order Valued at USD 227 Million

Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI) secured its inaugural newbuild contract for six IMO Type II chemical tankers, each 18,000 DWT, from Europe's Rederiet Stenersen AS. Valued at USD 227 million, this marks the first and largest chemical tanker order for an Indian shipyard, to be constructed at SDHI's revitalized Gujarat facility. The vessels will feature advanced dual-fuel LNG ready hybrid propulsion. This signifies a major milestone for India's growing commercial shipbuilding sector.

Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI) has achieved a significant milestone by securing its first newbuild contract for six IMO Type II chemical tankers, each with a capacity of 18,000 DWT. This landmark agreement, valued at USD 227 million, was awarded by Rederiet Stenersen AS, a prominent European shipowner. The vessels are slated for construction at SDHI’s revitalized shipyard in Gujarat, India, marking the first and largest chemical tanker order ever placed with an Indian shipyard, affirming India's growing prowess in complex commercial shipbuilding.The contract includes an option for an additional six sister vessels, with the first delivery anticipated within 33 months. Designed by Marinform AS and StoGda Ship Design & Engineering and classed by DNV, these tankers will adhere to Ice Class 1A standards. They will feature advanced dual-fuel LNG ready hybrid propulsion systems, allowing for multiple operational modes and high levels of automation, signifying a commitment to future-ready maritime technology.Vivek Merchant, Director at SDHI, emphasized the order as a historic moment for the shipyard’s transformation into a state-of-the-art shipbuilding hub, attributing success to global confidence and India's supportive maritime policies.
