Semiconductor plant will make Assam driver of engine for developed India: Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited the Tata Group's ₹27,000 crore semiconductor plant under construction in Assam, highlighting its strategic importance. The facility, expected to begin phased operations by mid-2025 and full production by 2026, aims to transform Assam into a key technology hub, reduce India’s reliance on imported chips, and drive economic growth aligned with the vision of a self-reliant India.
During her two-day visit to Assam, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman toured the Tata Electronics semiconductor manufacturing facility located in Jagiroad, Morigaon district. This high-value ₹27,000 crore (approximately US$3.6 billion) Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) plant is on track to commence operations in mid-2025, with full-scale production expected by 2026. The plant aims to produce up to 48 million semiconductor chips daily using advanced packaging technologies like flip chip and Integrated System in Package (ISIP). Sitharaman described the project as a 'driver of the engine for Viksit Bharat (Developed India)' and emphasized its role in positioning Assam as a major player in India's economic and technological development. The initiative supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India self-reliant in semiconductor production, thereby reducing dependence on imports and strengthening economic resilience. The facility is part of a broader government-backed network of projects to enhance India’s semiconductor ecosystem, promote high-tech manufacturing, and boost the socio-economic growth of the North-Eastern region.
