SK Minerals & Additives Develops India's First Halogen-Free Flame Retardant Additive
SK Minerals & Additives Ltd has become the first Indian company to develop a halogen-free flame retardant additive for XLPE wires, marking a significant advancement in eco-friendly cable production. The innovation addresses longstanding industry challenges and aims to capture import substitution opportunities in India and South Asia.
SK Minerals & Additives Ltd, a leading specialty chemicals manufacturer, has achieved a milestone by developing India's first halogen-free flame retardant additive, branded as Hofnil HFFR-XL. This additive is designed for use in XLPE wire and cable manufacturing, enabling safer, more sustainable, and environmentally friendly production. The product eliminates the need for halogen-based compounds, which release toxic gases during combustion, and meets stringent international flame retardant standards. The company aims to tap into import substitution opportunities in India and South Asian markets, with projected cumulative revenues exceeding ₹200 crore by FY28. The announcement was made at the Cable & Wire Fair 2025 in New Delhi. SK Minerals is currently securing industry certifications and has already received a letter of intent from a major Indian wires and cables manufacturer. The company's R&D team spent years perfecting the formulation, balancing thermal stability, dispersion, and compatibility. This achievement underscores SK Minerals' commitment to innovation and the 'Make in India, Serve the World' initiative, positioning it as a pioneer in polymer additives.
