Technip Energies Secures Contract to Convert Long Son Petrochemicals Cracker to Ethane
Technip Energies has been awarded a contract by Long Son Petrochemicals to convert its existing naphtha-based steam cracker to ethane feedstock. Utilizing Technip Energies’ proprietary ethylene technologies, including USC® furnace design and HRS®, the project aims for enhanced energy efficiency, optimized ethylene recovery, and a reduced carbon footprint. This strategic initiative, recorded in Q1 2026, optimizes feedstock efficiency and builds on a long-standing collaboration, marking a significant step in feedstock diversification for petrochemical producers globally.
Technip Energies has secured a crucial contract from Long Son Petrochemicals for engineering and procurement services, site assistance, and the supply of proprietary burners for cracking furnaces. The core of this project involves converting Long Son Petrochemicals' existing steam cracker from naphtha to ethane feedstock. This conversion will leverage Technip Energies' advanced proprietary ethylene technologies, specifically its Ultra Selective Conversion (USC®) furnace design and Heat-Integrated Rectifier System (HRS®), which promise high selectivity, improved energy efficiency, and optimized ethylene recovery. This strategic move aims to integrate large quantities of ethane into the current feedstock mix, thereby enhancing feedstock efficiency, achieving substantial cost reductions, significantly reducing carbon footprint intensity, and strengthening the facility's long-term strategic resilience against global market volatility. Notably, this project is among the first worldwide in recent years to convert a naphtha-based steam cracker to ethane, highlighting a broader industry trend towards feedstock diversification and the adoption of lower-carbon inputs for supply chain security. Improvements in feedstock flexibility within steam crackers, which are vital for producing ethylene and propylene, have a significant positive impact on the overall petrochemical value chain. This new contract further solidifies the long-standing collaboration between Technip Energies and Long Son Petrochemicals, following Technip Energies' previous delivery of the cracker unit's EPC between 2018 and 2023. Stéphane Mespoulhès of Technip Energies expressed satisfaction with the renewed trust, emphasizing how their technologies empower clients to adapt facilities to evolving market dynamics and boost competitiveness. The award was officially recorded in Q1 2026 in the Technology, Products & Services segment.
