Ukrainian Drones Strike Rosneft Petrochemical Plant in Russia's Samara Region
Ukrainian drones attacked Russia's Novokuibyshevsk Petrochemical Plant in the Samara region on April 23, sparking a fire. The governor confirmed the strike on the Rosneft-owned facility, a major producer of petrochemicals and reportedly components for explosives. This marks a repeated attack on the plant, which was previously targeted last June. The strike adds to a series of recent Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, including an oil pumping station and another refinery in the past week, highlighting ongoing efforts to disrupt Russia's industrial capabilities.
On April 23, a Ukrainian drone strike ignited a fire at the Novokuibyshevsk Petrochemical Plant in Russia's Samara region. Local reports and images confirmed at least one installation ablaze, with the regional governor subsequently affirming the attack by Ukrainian forces on an industrial facility. Preliminary analysis suggests the strike likely targeted a unit involved in producing methyl tert-amyl ether. The Novokuybyshevsk Petrochemical Company, a subsidiary of Rosneft, is a significant industrial asset, forming part of a large oil-refining and petrochemical complex. It is noted for its substantial processing capacity exceeding 1 million tonnes of feedstock annually, producing a diverse range of products including liquefied gases, MTBE, benzene, and olefins. Notably, the enterprise is Russia's sole producer of synthetic ethanol and para-tert-butylphenol, products critical to Russia and CIS countries.Ukrainian sources have previously highlighted the plant's importance in producing components utilized in explosives, making it a strategic target. This latest incident is not isolated; the same plant was struck by Ukrainian drones last June, resulting in another fire. The April 23 attack aligns with a broader pattern of Ukrainian drone operations targeting Russian energy and industrial infrastructure. Just prior to this incident, on April 18, the Novokuibyshevsk oil refinery in the same Samara region was also hit by Ukrainian UAVs, causing a fire. Additionally, on the same day as the petrochemical plant strike, drones reportedly hit the Gorky oil pumping station in the Nizhny Novgorod region. These persistent strikes underscore Ukraine's strategy to disrupt Russia's war economy and logistics through long-range aerial assaults.
