US Revokes Tariffs on Indian Imports Following Halt of Russian Oil Purchases
The US has revoked its additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, imposed in August 2025 due to India's Russian oil purchases. This decision follows India's commitment to halt all direct and indirect Russian oil imports, increase US energy product purchases, and expand defense cooperation. The White House stated this aligns India with US national security and economic priorities. Refunds for collected duties will be processed, but the tariff could be reimposed if India resumes Russian oil imports.
The United States, under President Donald Trump, has formally revoked the additional 25% tariff on all imports from India, a levy first imposed in August 2025. This significant policy shift comes after a thorough review of New Delhi’s recent actions concerning Russian oil purchases and its broader alignment with US interests. The original tariff was enacted under a national emergency declared via Executive Order 14066, in response to India's continued direct and indirect imports of Russian oil amidst international efforts to isolate Moscow over its actions in Ukraine. The White House stated that the decision to terminate the tariff stems from India's firm commitment to halt all direct and indirect imports of Russian Federation oil. Furthermore, India has pledged to significantly increase its purchases of US energy products and agreed to a new framework for expanding defence cooperation with Washington over the next decade. These steps, according to US officials, demonstrate India's efforts to address the national emergency and align more closely with US national security, foreign policy, and economic priorities. The executive order mandates the elimination of the 25% duty and the termination of associated tariff provisions, with refunds for already collected duties to be processed. While the revocation is effective immediately, the US will continue to monitor India's compliance, explicitly warning that the additional tariff could be reimposed if India resumes any form of Russian oil purchases. The order authorizes the Secretary of State and Secretary of Homeland Security to implement the necessary changes.
