This sauce is commonly served with popular street foods like momos and chowmein. Following complaints, officials seized and destroyed the substance, sending samples for laboratory analysis. A significant food safety operation in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur district, near Meerut, has exposed alarming practices in the street food industry. Authorities raided a house and seized approximately 200 litres of a suspicious red-coloured sauce, widely used with popular street foods such as momos, chowmein, and burgers. Officials suspect the sauce was concocted using a dangerous mix of chemicals, acids, and artificial colouring, rather than natural ingredients, rendering it unfit for human consumption.The raid was prompted by a series of complaints regarding adulterated products being sold as vegetable sauce. During the inspection, the seized mixture was immediately identified as unsafe. Many street food vendors reportedly purchase such ready-made sauces from unregulated units, bypassing standard quality controls, which poses a serious public health risk.Following the discovery, samples of the questionable sauce have been dispatched to a laboratory for comprehensive analysis to precisely determine its contents. The entire seized stock was destroyed on the spot to prevent further distribution. Food Safety Officer Sunil Kumar Tyagi confirmed the substance appeared unsafe and stated that strict legal action would be initiated against those involved once the lab results confirm the adulteration. This incident underscores critical concerns about the safety and regulation of ingredients used in widely consumed street foods across India.
